MAY 30 | 6:30–9:30PM | Smith Family Chapel

Church on Monday Featuring Elias Haslanger , Dr. James Polk, & Todd V. Wolfson

Native Texan and Austin resident Elias Haslanger has carved a unique and distinguished place in jazz history as a saxophonist, composer, and band leader. He has performed, recorded, and toured with many world-class artists including Ellis Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Christopher Cross, Asleep at the Wheel, Alejandro Escovedo, Charlie Hunter, Sheryl Crow, Doyle Bramhall II, Grupo Fantasma, The Four Tops, and The Temptations, among many others.

He has also served as a guest artist/lecturer at universities around the nation. Mentored by the legendary saxophonists Harvey Pittel and Dick Oatts, Elias began to explore the instrument’s vast potential by studying saxophone at the University of Texas and then at the Manhattan School of Music. His interest in writing music culminated in a Master’s Degree in Composition at Texas State University (TSU) in San Marcos.

Another Native Texan Dr. James Polk from a family gene pool virtually overflowing with piano players, including both parents, his sister and an aunt, James came to the piano relatively late in his youth. After being initiated into a life of music as an eight year old, violinist, James soon gladly changed to the saxophone, only to discover in middle school, his band director needed trombone players. So James switched his attention to mastering the trombone in high school and college. By the time he had finished undergraduate degree in 1963, James was already a professional musician. But he had had enough of the trombone and decided to marry his family heritage and his own musical talent to the piano. His decision not only kept alive his family's tradition, but gave birth to one of the finest blues and jazz keyboard artists to come out of the Texas music scene in the last half century.

In his last year at Huston-Tillotson University he organized the “James Polk and the Brothers” band. The band was renown for spotlighting fine musicians, such as Martin Banks and W.C. Clark, as well as soulful singer, Angela Strehli. More notably he was featured with the Ray Charles Orchestra on recordings, such as “Brother Ray Is At It Again” (1980), “The Spirit of Christmas” (1985); and on the Grammy nominated “Ain't It So” (1979) and “Wish You Were Here Tonight” (1983). Dr. Polk is currently associated with the Dr. James Polk Academy of Arts and Technology and the Austin Jazz Workshop. His most recently formed jazz ensemble, Centerpeace, which performs regularly in Austin is made up of young jazz musicians who see him as their leader, mentor and friend.

Immerse: Sunday Worship Nights

Immerse_2019_1920x692_JUN.jpg

Do you find yourself craving a deeper worship experience with your Creator and your community?

1st SUNDAY OF THE MONTH | 6:00PM | STUDENT CENTER
Childcare offered for children birth-2nd grade — register below

Come explore a completely different worship experience. The music starts at 6:00PM, and it doesn’t stop until we’re done — no exaggeration. While the music is playing, we provide an open mic for anyone who wants to pray, share how they’ve been experiencing God, and request prayer. Sometimes we lay hands on each other in prayer, sometimes we improvise worship choruses based on what is shared or prayed over… it’s never the same as the month before, and it’s nearly impossible to describe if you’re not there.

Before worship, around 5:00PM we’ll share a big family dinner. Bring something to share, or enjoy what’s provided. This is a great opportunity for us to come together as the Immerse family and connect with each other before we start the music at 6:00PM.

If worship and prayer are a vital expression of your faith, Immerse was quite literally designed for you. We’ll see you there!

What if I have kids?

We want to allow our kids to experience Immerse worship as much or as little as they're capable! We think that allowing our kids to have the option to participate in worship can be extremely powerful, and we’re committed to helping make that as easy and flexible as possible.

We have childcare available — but we ask that you register them in advance by sending a quick email to our Susan Kennedy on our Children’s Ministry team. We encourage you to register your child ahead of time, and then allow them to worship with you until they’re ready to go to childcare.

When a devastating injury puts Zach, and his dreams, on the sidelines, David laces up his track cleats to salvage their future and point Zach toward hope. “Run the Race” shows what’s possible when you run to---and not from---the overwhelming love of God.

Museum Day

JUL 7 | 12:15PM

Meet: Front of the Quads
Cost: The only cost involved will be lunch on your own

We will meet in front of the Quads and car pool to the Bob Bullock Museum. Then we will eat lunch (lunch not provided) and visit a number of displays.

The World War I exhibit presents the stories of a divisive and transformational America told through original artifacts, images, voices, music, hands-on-exploration, and multimedia presentations. Throughout the exhibit, visitors encounter “Witnesses”, people who represent the complex and divergent stories of the day. The exhibit takes us from the days prior to the War, during the War, and post-War problems and successes.

We will also see the exhibit, Becoming Texas: Where the Story Begins. This one-of-a-kind journey goes through more than 16,000 years of Texas history where they have documented the rise and fall of nations up to the Mexican Independence in 1821. You will have a chance to see the men and women who established trade networks across the Americans, see how tough it was to put food on the table,  and discover LaSalle’s failed attempt to establish a colony in the Gulf Coast in 1684.

We will also see how the rebuilding of the expedition’s 300-year-old ship, La Belle, is progressing. You will see thousands of items of cargo found in the hull.

We will also see the Lusher Collection: Collections from Private Collections in Texas. You will see a selection of 27 artifacts reflecting the confluence of Spanish, American Indian, and Anglo cultures that have inhabited the border region in the last 400 years.

MAR 6 | 7:00AM, 12:00PM, 6:00PM | Smith Family Chapel

All three services are the same, and all three are held in the Smith Family Chapel

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent which is the season where the global church remembers together Jesus' love for us through his work on the cross.  We are designing a service that will be held at three different times throughout the day (7am, 12pm, 6pm) for you to come to Riverbend at the Smith Family Chapel and prepare your heart to celebrate Easter.  It is going to be an active and reflective service that incorporates song, Bible reading, reflections, and actions.  It is designed to be an immersive and interactive service that opens the door to for our hearts to engage Jesus in a new way.

Kids and adults of all ages are welcome to participate.  I hope you will consider coming and engage Jesus in a new way this year.

You were designed for a purpose

FEB 22–24, 2019 | Mo-Ranch, Hunt Tx

The Men’s Summit is for YOU!  It is a weekend built for guys to unplug from their daily responsibilities in order to connect with God and other men.  When you take the time to do this you will find that God really does show up!

Join us for the weekend at Mo-Ranch Christian Conference Center.

  • SPEAKER: DAN LANCE

  • SPECIAL GUEST: TOM LANDIS

  • WORSHIP LEADER: CASEY MCPHERSON

This is not one more thing to “do”. This is a time to “be”. To be with other men. To be encouraged and refreshed. To be blessed. I hope you will join me and the other men and come to our 2019 Men’s Summit. I promise you an opportunity to find “more”!

- PASTOR HANEY

Featured Speaker: Dan Lance

Lance.jpg

Dan’s an entrepreneur, a restaurant owner, and a pastor. He currently owns two restaurants in Longmont, Colorado (outside Boulder), that helps to fund their non-profit called The Rooster Party – an organization that helps couples with the high cost of funding adoptions.

Dan will help us learn about the specific purpose that God has designed each of us for at this stage of our lives. Not only will we be challenged, but we’ll get to wrestle with this topic with the men at our table groups after each session!

Dan was born and raised in Riverside, CA. He has been married to his wife Alyssa for 20 years and they have 3 kids: Ezekiel – 15, Sofia – 12, and Moses – 10. He’s been a church planter, lead pastor, worship leader, and executive pastor for fourteen years at two different churches in California. He’s also a close friend of our Outreach Pastor, Aaron Foor.

After opening their non-profit, in 2013 Dan and Alyssa moved to Colorado where they opened two restaurants. Dan is currently an elder at Cornerstone Church in Boulder, CO, where he also serves as a worship leader and leads their men’s ministry. He believes in saying YES to Jesus and living a life of risk.

Special Guest: Tom Landis

On Saturday afternoon, Tom Landis will share an amazing story. Tom is the founder of Howdy Homemade, the first for-profit restaurant that employs people with special needs. While opening 13 restaurants over past two decades, Tom leads by prioritizing God, family, the other employees, customers and self.

He’s received many honors, including the Ryan Albers’ Lifetime Achievement Award, The Governor of Texas’ Lex Friedan Award for Best Small Business, The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and his first franchise won Best Ice Cream in the State of Utah for 2018.

He currently has more than 50 people that want to franchise, and has an exclusive partnership with Dr Pepper to make and produce Dr Pepper flavored ice cream. Tom believes the best way to know business is to know people … the best way to know people is the Bible … and the best way to know the Bible is DTS. Which is sort of weird because he only went there for a semester and was drunk before, during and after most classes.

Landis was led to Jesus by Dr. Haney, and Jesus helped Landis with alcoholism and so many other issues. Landis lives in Dallas with his wife and two kids, but wishes he lived in Austin.

Worship Leader: Casey McPherson

McPherson.jpg

One of Austin’s most accomplished singer songwriters, he and his band Alpha Rev have toured extensively through the US and internationally. A recovering alcoholic and drug addict, Casey has a remarkable story of Christ’s intervention in his life through the music ministry of Riverbend Church. Casey is the worship leader at Riverbend for the Resonate service, lives in Austin, and is the proud father of two young girls.

Casey believes that God shows up when we get together to worship Him. So the band encourages the men to come with some expectation! He and his band will lead them in times of worship throughout the weekend, helping set the table for the men to encounter the living God, providing a platform to hear what He might say to them.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for men who cannot afford to attend the Summit.

FEB 15–17 | Home For Hope | All students

ATX Student Weekend is our annual winter retreat for ALL Middle School and High School students. Students will stay in host homes, participate in a service project, enjoy worship and dive deeper into God’s Word through talks and small groups.

For the third year, we are partnering with several churches around Austin to create something even bigger than before – and we are hosting it again! The plan is to pack the Home for Hope with 1000+ students for concert-like worship and a challenging message. Outside of that time, we will spend the weekend with our Riverbend Student Ministry family, focusing on building community through small groups in host homes and service projects with our mission partners around the city.
