JANUARY

Movie: “A Case for Christ”  |  Quad 3

JAN 18 @ 12:30PM

THE CASE FOR CHRIST is based on the best-selling book of the same title by Lee Strobel, which walks the reader through Strobel’s investigations into the factual basis for Christianity’s claims about Jesus Christ. As a rising-star journalist at the Chicago Tribune—and an atheist—Strobel sought to discredit Christianity by doing what he did best: interviewing experts, checking facts, and collating sources into a logical whole. The further he looked into the matter, though, the more convinced he became that the Bible was telling the truth about Jesus, and in the early 1980s, he converted to the faith. As Strobel tells it in his book, his wife’s sudden conversion to Christianity was the bombshell that prompted his attempt to debunk Jesus’ resurrection. In the film, he isn’t engaging in an intellectual exercise or trying to score ideological points; he is fighting for the survival of his marriage. The tagline for The Case for Christ could just as well be that familiar Hollywood-trailer cliché: “This time, it’s personal.”  The film’s stars are Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway, and Robert Forster.

Meet: Quad 3 at 12:30PM for chili hotdogs and popcorn.  The movie begins at 1:00PM
Cost: $3

After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does.

Meet: Palace Theater at 2:00PM. Plan to eat afterwards at a place to be determined.
Cost: $30 for senior adults
Deadline to sign-up: FEB 16

MARCH

APRIL

"My Fair Lady" — Palace Theater, Georgetown

APR 22 @ 2:00PM

Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion” My Fair Lady is gloriously triumphant. The tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady features one of musical theatre’s greatest scores. Songs include “The Rain in Spain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” and “Get Me to the Church on Time.”  This is a play you can watch over and over and still love and enjoy it.

Meet: Palace Theater at 2:00PM. Plan to eat afterwards at a place to be determined.

Angels Afoot Christmas Gift Drive

CHRISTMAS GIFT DRIVE FOR CHILDREN

Each November the members and friends of Riverbend purchase gifts for thousands of underserved children located throughout the greater Austin area and beyond.  These kids are in foster care, shelters, and other very difficult situations. Together we make Christmas a little better over 2,500 children across Austin including the Rundberg and Travis Heights areas, as well as 300 children in El Salvador!  This year we are children adding East Austin and  children in Vidor, Texas to our mission.

During NOV we work to assign, sort and deliver gifts.

COLLECTING TAGS, SORTING, & DELIVERING GIFTS

Here is how it works:

  • Select a a tag (or several) before or after the worship service.
  • Select a gift from the suggestions on the label, or an age-appropriate gift.  Gifts should be new, not used.
  • Gifts should cost no more than $35-40, so that all children, some of whom may be in a group setting, will receive gifts of the same approximate value.  If you feel more generous, please take additional gifts instead.
  • Follow the instructions - some gifts are wrapped and others are not.
  • Return your gift(s) to the Home for Hope by noon Sunday, NOV 26.

All of the gifts go to support the children and families who are served by partner agencies. Riverbend does not fulfill individual requests for donations through this drive.

Through financial contributions and additional tags we are going to be able to provide small gifts for kids in Rundberg as well as school uniforms, books, and food for the 250 kids we serve in El Salvador
