SEPTEMBER

SAN ANTONIO MISSION TRIPS

SEP 21 @ 9:00AM

The Old Spanish Missions of San Antonio are a chain of five colonial era compounds located in a southern line from the center of downtown San Antonio to the southern edgeof the city. They were established in the 18th Century as an outreach of the Spanish Government and the Catholic Church. The Franciscan Fathers founded each mission to evangelize the regional natives, teach them skills to help them adopt to Spanish ways, and minister to their needs. Additionally, the effort was to make them active citizens of the Spanish province of Tejas. Military forces were often located in the vicinity of each mission to offer protection.

Four of the five original missions still function as active Catholic parish Churches. They serve both a stable population of parish members as well as many visitors who attend worship services. These are Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan and Espada. They are operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio as the Old Spanish Missions, Inc., an umbrella non-profit organization to provide for their care. The Archbishop of San Antonio appoints the Director of the Old Spanish Missions, who is responsible for the maintenance and restoration of the mission churches.

San Antonio de Valero, known as the Alamo, is owned by the State of Texas and operated by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. It does not function as an active parish church and is not part of the Old Spanish Missions, Inc. and, therefore, we will not be visiting this site.

Meet: We will leave from Austin at 9:00AM and return at 4:00PM
Cost: $80 – includes the cost of the bus and lunch.
Deadline to sign-up: SEP 10 (need at least 15 people for the trip to make this price)

Bus Tour: Community First!, South/East Austin NCDs

OCT 4 @ 10:00AM

Community First is a homeless village in East Austin. It consists of tiny homes (150-200 square feet) with community kitchens and baths.  It was started by Alan Graham of Mobil Loaves and Fishes.  Riverbend has built 4 houses and a kitchen.  While there we will see some of the homes, the garden, life-size chess set, chickens and goats, a community building will almost be finished when we go visit.  We will also meet our Riverbend Chaplain, Mike Sculley and his wife, and sit on their deck to talk about the Village and eat a hamburger. We will then travel to East Austin to a new Mission site just started by Riverbend under the leadership of Pradeep Thorat.  Then we move on to our Mission site in South Austin, Travis Heights Christian Outreach. This is being led by Brian and Carol Rawson. We hope to take around 45 people.  You will be astounded at what you see and hear.

Meet: We will leave in front of the Quads at 10:00AM and return by 3:00PM
Cost: $25 – includes the cost of the bus and lunch.
Deadline to sign-up: SEP 26
